Tennis Racket Evolution

14th Century Origins In the 14th century, Italians invented the tennis racket. The earliest version appeared in the 16th century and was made from parchment. This early design laid the foundation for future innovations.

Retro Racket (1880-1920) From 1880 to 1920, we see the emergence of a retro-style racket. Initially, these rackets were crafted by processing sturdy model pieces of wood. Over time, they were slowly cut into thin pieces of bamboo or wood, which were then bent and baked into shape.

Aged Wooden Racket (1920-1940) From 1920 to 1940, the aged wooden racket became more refined. It started using brick-pressed wood and incorporated some aerodynamic design elements. The leather grip also became more detailed, reflecting advancements in manufacturing techniques. Producing these rackets involved complex processes such as cutting, adhering, baking, bending, forming, painting, and reinforcing the wood.

Popularity for Nearly 100 Years Despite their drawbacks, such as moisture and variability, wooden rackets remained popular for nearly a century. This longevity stands out, especially considering the limitations of materials available before iron and aluminum rackets.

Monumental Significance

Although wooden rackets have been largely replaced by lighter, more advanced carbon rackets, the era of wooden tennis rackets remains a significant milestone in the history of the sport.
